Products that Keep Your Garden Weed Free - Weeder Reviews

By Dolores Monet

An attractive, healthy garden should be kept free of weeds. Nuisance plants rob garden soil of nutrients best absorbed by those flowering or vegetable plants that you enjoy. Weeds suck up moisture, depriving your favorites of that crucial necessity. And a garden filled with weeds is an unsightly mess.

Weeds can be hand pulled once they grow to a grabbable size. But by this time, they've already plundered valuable resources. Some weeds are covered with prickly thorns or sticky sap that make them unpleasant to touch. And if you allow the weeds to go to seed, those seeds can fall, germinate, and take over the garden.

The easiest way to control weeds is to catch them as soon as they sprout. Most people have easily recognized nuisance weeds. And in summer, if you rid your garden of seedling weeds, chances are you will not mistake them for flowers or vegetable seedlings. By this time, most of the things you want to grow are established plants.

By removing young weeds often you can save yourself a lot of time and aggravation. An hour or two a week should nip those little troublemakers in the bud.

A hand held weeding too can be used to get out those pesky weeds. As they are seedlings, they will be very shallow rooted.

Move the weeder back and forth across the surface of the soil (or mulch). This will pull up the tiny plants without disturbing your flowers or vegetables.

The young weeds will quickly dry out in warm weather or hot sun and die. You can leave them where they are.

A weed free garden is a beautiful sight to behold. You can shop online for weeders. I've read up on weeders and customer reviews, condensing them here for your convenience.

Dolores, GREAT Hub! The garden pic makes me long to get my hands dirty. I love gardening and grow much of my own fruits and veggies. Something a lot of folks don't understand is the art of a tiller. I have an old one with a good milwauke engine, so it'll out live me, but folks don't understand how to start a garden. With the rise in interest many are looking to get started. Now, that would be another good hub... Peace :)

Hey - great hub! Weeding is a true discipline! As you say, short regular bursts can keep it under control

We had a neighbour where I grew up - we joked that when the weeds heard him coming up the path with his hoe - they would disappear back down into the ground!

Thank you Dolores Monet for this very useful hub. Weeds are more than plentiful in Colorado--particularly Canadian thistle.

katie - I was just out today checking on what I need to do to get started on the garden. I never use tillers, just pick up the old shovel and get to work. Thanks for commenting!

coolmon, my husband does the veggies and I do the flowers. Good luck with your garden! Thanks!

dragonbear, well that happens in reverse here. They pop up behind me as I go, haha. Thanks for stopping in!

junueau, i never used to get thistle but now get tons of it. You have to get those thistles early because pulling them out hurts like the dickens. Thanks!

granny, I love my little Hula Ho. One of my sons gave me one for a birthday gift and it is great for getting the weeds out early. Thanks!

Maita, I'd never been one to use garden gadgets, just a shovel and a hoe, but the Hula Ho was given to me as a gift, partly in jest and I found that it soon became one of my favorite garden tools. Thanks for stopping in!
