Baby Shower Gift and Decoration - How to Make A Diaper Cake

By Dolores Monet

A Diaper Cake is a Fun Gift and Decoration for a Baby Shower

A diaper cake is a tiered 'cake' shaped decoration made of rolled baby diapers and other items needed to welcome a baby into the world. It makes an amusing and attractive centerpiece for a baby shower as well as a practical gift for prospective parents. You can't have too many diapers!

The cake resembles a wedding cake and is usually made with three layers of rolled diapers. You can find diapers with decorated edging to make your baby shower decoration extra-pretty. I found some cute diapers with polka-dots.

Purchase ribbon that matches the colors that you use to decorate the shower. Or, if the baby's gender is known, use blue ribbon for a boy, or pink ribbon for a girl. If the gender is not known, or mom is just not telling, find ribbon colored with both pink and blue. Green is a popular color when giving a gift to a baby of unknown gender.

When you create your diaper cake, it is a lot easier if 2 people are working together; and a lot more fun too!

Diaper Cake - Bottom Tier

Items Needed to Make a Diaper Cake

  • 60 or more diapers - we used more a made a really huge cake
  • Ribbon - a roll of sturdy ribbon from a craft store, at least 1 inch wide. Also, you'll need a roll of thinner ribbon.
  • Rubber Bands - you'll need some very large ones and a lot of small to medium sized
  • 1 Bottle - baby bottle, or large bottle of baby lotion or baby shampoo
  • Cake platter - cut a large circle out of card board, or some kind of stiff craft board
  • Baby items to decorate the finished product (small toys, pacifiers, wash cloths, etc.)

How to Make a Diaper Cake

1st Layer -3 rings of diapers

  • Unfold 35 or so newborn sized diapers. Roll up tight. Secure each rolled diaper with a rubber band.
  • Place large bottle in center and circle with rolled diapers. Secure with large rubber band.
  • Make another ring by repeating as above.
  • Encircle first group of diapers and secure with large rubber band.
  • Outer 1st layer - Roll diapers, making sure that the printed edge shows. Tie a small piece of the thinner ribbon around each diaper.
  • Place the ribboned diapers around the edge, encircling the other diapers. Secure tightly with the wide ribbon.

Add 2nd Tier

Add Top Tier

2nd Layer - 2 rings of diapers

  • Repeat as above, but only create 2 rings of diapers.
  • Secure inner ring with a large rubber band.
  • Secure each rolled diaper in the outer ring with thin ribbon. Encircle the whole outer ring with the wide ribbon. Tie tightly.

3rd and Top Layer

The top layer only needs one circle of diapers. Roll diapers and tie with thinner ribbon. Secorue top layer of diapers with the thicker ribbon.

Tuck small toys and baby items all around.

As you can see from the pictures, I did not exactly follow the directions that I have given. I was working with someone else and we were rushing through. It just makes more sense to follow the instructions.

Of course, instructions are really suggestions, aren't they

Thanks, Katie, glad you enjoyed the hub. It was a lot of fun. Peace to you, too.

G-Ma - those days are gone for me too, honey! Giving a baby shower is one thing. Having a baby is quite another! Thanks!

Thank you, sheila. We had a great time making it. Glad you like the blog, I need to work on it some more.

cbris, it's great to have a practical decoration instead of something to throw away. And new moms need plenty of diapers, not really a fun gift, unless you make a diaper cake!

I had one for my baby shower and was so greatful for the reusable centerpiece and extra diapers that I made one for my sister. I took it step further and had guests guess the numbers of diapers in the cake for a prize.

Dolores...

It was sweet to read this! I didn´t even know they existed, or it just simply isn´t in our cultural customs, either way it was fun to read, not that I plan to get a new baby, mind you, but if my son decides to finally make me grandpa, I have an idea to share, hehehe! Thanks for sharing!

Warmest regards and infinite blessings,

Al

ethel - I had never heard of it either. My baby days are long past. Thanks for stopping by!

Leslie - that is a great idea, wish I had thought of it, sort of killing two birds with one stone. Actually 3 birds : gift, decoration, and game. Thanks!

gramarye - yep, it's been a long time around here. The baby has arrived and how lovely he is. It's marvelous to help welcome a new little person into the world. Thanks!

Mystique - well it wasn't in my culture either til about a month ago. I'd never heard of diaper cakes until my friend showed me how to make one. Thank you for stopping by!

akirchner - glad you enjoyed the hub! Thanks!

I just don't know D, even with some vanilla ice cream on the side, this cake just doesn't seem like it would taste that good to me. I have been trying to get into the baby shower things with my wife. We've both been married once before, though this is her first child, my second, people seem less into the shower because she's over 30, I'm older still. Anyway, guess that's a tangent, I like this diaper cake, thank goodness it's not fudge chocolate or I would have more questions. LOL. Fun article. Also like the new profile pic, steamin'

Or maybe it's the same profile pic and I never noticed the steam? Not sure, either way, upon closer inspection, I like it!

Dolores Monet profile image

Dolores Monet Hub Author 2 years ago

Ben! First baby = baby shower. Your wife just endure a baby shower - the stupid games, the redundant gifts, the catterwalling of women - it's so much fun.

I have occasionally changed the profile pic but it never works out. There are 2 pix of Dolores digging chicken shit, but this one highlights the steam. Thank you for noticing. You are very observant!

Great hub : ) I had the pleasure of making one of these for the first time a few months ago for my sister's baby shower, and let me tell you it was work. I always enjoy crafty things and these can be fun to make but don't let them fool you, it's work to, lol

Dolores Monet profile image

ng - well all cool stuff is work! Some people just like to make stuff with their hands. I think something like a diaper cake is best made with a friend! Thanks for dropping in!

Hi Dolores Monet, while I work with a company that sells manufactured ones I have never made a diaper cake as a craft project myself. This hub is so informative, straight forward and helpful. I might use this in the future. Vote up and useful.

Dolores Monet profile image

Dolores Monet Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi, Journey - hmmh, a company that makes them? Cool idea for those who don't have the time or inclination to take on the project. Thank you very much!

Hi Dolores

I love making (and receiving) diaper cakes. What you may not know is that you can eliminate some of the work by NOT rolling each diaper. In fact, you can just wrap a flat diaper around the center object and then just keep layering the flat diapers around until you get your desired diameter, and secure with a large rubber band and ribbon. That way, the recipient of the gift doesn't have to un-rubber band each diaper before using also (which is a pain to do for any mom).

sunbun - hmmm, I can't quite picture what you mean but that sounds like it would work out quite well. Good to have the suggestion. Thanks for your input!
