Hair Cuts - How to Cut Hair at Home and Save Money - Chin Length Bob

By

Cut hair at home and save money by learning a few simple techniques of hair cutting.

Going to the salon can be expensive and if you want to really look good, you are going to have to shell out a lot of dough. For many of us middle class folks (the real middle class, the ones without any money), the type of hair cut we can comfortably afford just doesn't look so great. Maybe, if you're lucky, you can find the right hair stylist, the one who knows what you want and how to make you look good. Then, if she is good enough, she leaves the Hair Butchery for a more expensive shop. And so you're back to square one.

Well, I'm here to tell you that you can learn to cut hair yourself, at home. The first time I tried it - on myself, I received tons of compliments.  The first time I ever got a compliment on a hair style or cut was when I did it myself.

So - here are some pictures and a simple guide to cut a chin length bob.

You'll need scissors, a fine comb, water or a spray bottle of water, and something to protect your victim's, I mean client's clothing from debris.

Dampen and comb hair.

Straight cut horizontally along the sides and back to desired length.

Pull the hair that fromes the face up above her head and snip so that it's even.

For a little fluff, you can slightly layer the hair along the sides and back. Leave the freshly cut bottom hair alone. Section and lift the back and sides up in thin, vertical sections.Snip just the edges off for a slight layer effect. Or you can snip off a bit more. Thin, straight hair will look fuller. Follow around the head, repeating for the slightly layer effect.

Cut hair around edges and back, making sure that you keep it straight

Make sure it's nice and even

Check so the side is even. We wanted this cut to angle down in front just a bit.

Raise front hair to make sure both sides are even

Pull the front up straight and trim to even out

To layer for some volume, put hair out from head in thin vertical sections

Then snip - this is the scary part, then repeat around the head

All done - doesn't she look nice!

Good article and pictures to help demonstrate how the cut is done…Thanks for sharing this info!

Thank you, Nancy. I checked out a lot of bob cuts on youtube and there were so many different methods but this one worked quite well.

Excellent! I might get brave enough to try it. You make it look pretty easy. I think I'll practice on my husband.

Patti Ann, you can try my other hub on a man's short hair cut - men's hair is probably easier because you can just take it shorter and shorter - heck, half of them shave it all off now!

Layering, that's the scary part alright. After reading and looking at the layering demonstration, I feel I'm getting more confident. I've already cut my hair, now I want it layered. Like Patti Ann's comment, I think I'll practice on my husband, or my son, or even my daughter. If I practice on them first then mine should look great, lol.

Dotti - it's the layering that makes the cut - I was scared to try it as well but a straight cut is actually harder to make look good. If you're afraid to layer, just take off a real teensy bit.

Great hub --- and since I left my hairdresser of many years behind in SoCal, I'm a year overdue for a REAL haircut. I let it grow this summer so I could get it up off my neck during the humid months. But I'm feeling old and need to get rid of it!

KE - I haven't had a real haircut in years and, shucks, I'm proud to say it. (Might not look so great, but, hey, who's looking?)

I am going to try it!! I have to admit I do trim my hair but have been afraid to layer but I will test it on my mom's hair and let you know. :)

Thx for the tips Delores but I only have 5 strands left ! (plus my gray ones ) Make that 11 strands ! :D

AE, that's the ticket, use your dear old mum as a guiniea pig! Ha! Only kidding. Actually, my mother taught me to cut hair by forcing me to cut hers. "But suppose I ruin it!" I cried. "Don't worry, you won't."

tony - thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment - a good haircut can make those 11 strands really effective strands!

Need someone to try it out...

-on? A younger child is a great first customer. They really don't care what you do to them, haha. Cutting your own hair can be scarey, but helps you understand how to do it.

I tried cutting the hair of my friend and I was pleasantly surprised, she liked it! LOL I will keep this hub in mind as I may try the haircut you have outlined above.

Digest, we all used to go to the local Hair Butchery and I was never happy. Once I started cutting my own hair, I got more compliments. I cut the whole family's hair and some friend's hair as well.

my cut my mum's hair using these instructions, and after the experience I enjoyed it and I am now a full time hairdresser, which pleases my mum because she gets a free haircut.

I have always cut my own hair. I have naturally thick, coarse, and curly hair. (Much like a horses tail...LOL!) So going to the beauty shop and getting a decent hair cut is like aiming for the lottery. Most of the beauticians I see claim to know how to cut hair like mine, but are soon overwhelmed by how much hair I have. Before long I found it easier to cut my own. Great hub!

tlpoague - I am sure there are professionals who would (and have) objected to my little hair cutting lesson here. And while I would love to get myself an expensive, well done hair cut my own self, in tough times, we make do. My other hair cutting hub features a young man with hair that sounds like yours - thick and curly, a marvelous head of hair. My own is ironing board straight and I'd love to have the massive curls like you (and my son). Thank you!
