Hair Cuts - How to Cut Hair at Home and Save Money

By

A Basic Hair Cut for Men (or Boys)

Cut hair at home and save money by learning a few simple techniques of hair cutting.

I was sick and tired of spending $20.00 on a hair cut and coming out looking like hell. I'd take my kids to the Hair Butchery and when they came out, I wanted to cry. How could they make my beautiful children look so terrible? So, I decided to learn to cut hair myself.

I was my own guinea pig. The first time I cut my own hair, I received compliments galore! Now, I cut everybodys' hair. And they like the hair cuts!

So, the other day, when my son, Ajax, decided he was sick of the Sterling Holloway look, I decided to write a Hub about it.

Follow me through a basic haircut, a short cut on a curly haired young man. You can modify this same technique for different lengths on men and women.

Hair Cut - Male Hair Cut With Scissors and Clippers

Assemble materials - sharp scissors, electic razor, comb.

Decide on hair style and length. Ajax wanted it short.

Dampen hair slightly.

How to Cut Hair

Begin the haircut above the forehead, dividing hair into sections, moving around the top of the head, following the cut lines in the illustrations. Keep the sections small and don't cut off too much. If he wants it shorter, you can always cut off more.

Make sure that you cut the sections evenly. You can gauge the cut length by lifting a piece of already cut hair to measure against.

Scissor cut in horizontal lines at the top of the head and vertical lines around the back and side.

Scissor cut the shorter hair on the lower portion of the head.

Begin at the front of the head, gather a section angled from front to back

Move around the head, pulling up and cutting small sections

Have the 'client' move his head so that you can easily reach the section you want to cut at the proper angle

Cut side hair in vertical sections

Hair Cut - Now for the Clippers

Comb the longer top hair out of the way. Secure. Hair should be completely dry.

Make sure that you have read all the instructions that come with the clippers. This will tell you how to make the proper adjustments for the length that you want. The number set on the guide attachment will determine the length of the hair.

Cut hair off in an upward, scooping motion as shown in the photograph.

Clean hair out of the clipper frequently by using a small brush or blow it out.

Bend his ear to trim above the ear.

Remove the guide to trim the bottom edge in back and the sideburns so that it's nice and straight.

Pull the longer, top hair out of the way

Start at the bottom and work toward the top in a scooping motion

Neatly trim the bottom edge. Take the gude off the clipper.Make sure you get it straight!

I've been cutting my own hair for 25 years or more. My wife has to do the neckline, but I do the rest. It's easy for a bald guy. The barber used to tease me about charging me the full fee for a haircut. He said that half of it was for a "finder's fee."

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Ha, you must miss the funny barber. Thanks, Diamond.

I am a woman with long hair, but I also cut mine at home. My last trip to the salon in December when I dyed and got my hair layered was about 120 dollars, so I decided it is time to save money. I always enjoyed my stylist up until that point, but I actually felt kind of weird around her that last time I went.

I felt like I was not cool enough for her to be styling my hair, or at least compared to some of her other clients. I was sad to come out of the salon feeling this way because I had really come to enjoy her services up until that point, but even the second to the last visit was kind of weird. Oh well, I can cut my hair at home, and I am actually am happier with the results.

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Sweetie, I bet you're happier with that extra $120.00 too! You think that she thought you weren't cool enough? Well I think you're cool enough. Huh! You should have said, 'I gota 100 Hubscore, bitch - ' haha

Informative hub. Good pics and handy vids. Reckon I could shear a few people now, but I guarantee you, my wife wouldn't let me near her hair wih a pair of scissors. Ha!

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

chrisiansek - i found it best to practice on myself. also, you can start off with someone who has fairly long hair and just don't cut it off real short, give yourself some wiggle room.

Nancy's Niche 2 years ago

Great article and instructional pictures. I use to cut my boy's hair when they were still at home.

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Thanks for stopping by, Nancy. Most of my kids are grown and they want me to cut their hair more now than when they were younger. Maybe because now they have to pay for it.

Olive P 2 years ago

Great pix. Informative, too. I cut my own curly locks with a razor. I got tired of paying $$$ for haircuts I wasn't happy with. Now if I'm not happy with the way I cut it, at least I didn't have to shell out for it.

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

So true, Olive. As I always say to myself before I cut my own hair - it'll grow back. And if I don't like it, at least I didn't waste money.

Dottie1 2 years ago

Thanks for the hair cutting demonstration. It was very helpful and yes your son looks very happy and handsome too!

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Dotti, I remember the days when a hair cut meant screaming and crying (that was the other one). Now he wonders why I let him grow his hair so long. Thanks for stopping by.

Peggy W 2 years ago

I've been cutting my hair since high school days. I also cut my husbands hair and for many years also my mothers. As you say...it if is not perfect...it grows back. Ha!

Your son is handsome. Nice of him to pose for the photos for your hub.

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Peggy, thank you. Yes, I don't know what's happened to the boy. He's cooperative, pleasant, and smiled when he saw I used his picture on HubPages. What's wrong with my son!?

blondepoet 2 years ago

Hey there Dolores, I am all for cutting hair at home, this is bonza. Just be careful of those ear lobes LMAO, darn they are hard to sew back on loool. I speak from experience. xo

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

blondepoet, I've always been a Star Trek fan and really like those Vulcans. And fairies and pixies too. Those pointy ear lobes might look kinda cute with a pixie cut!

frogyfish 2 years ago

Wow! Beautiful red headed guy! A real model for you and he is a cool cutie!

I first cut my long hair when I was a teen - to barely shoulder length, and it was horrible! That was a long time ago, but the memory still haunts me! I do much better today on my very short and greying hair! :-)

Thanks for a fun and informative hub!

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

frogyfish, I think shorter hair is easier to cut. Sorry you messed yourself up in the past, but what good are the teenaged years if you can't make a bit of a mess of yourself. Thanks for stopping by!

Lgali 2 years ago

another good hub thnaks

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

I am glad that you enjoyed it, Lgali. Thanks for stopping by.

Pacal Votan 2 years ago

The before pic looked too funny, so I was curious and scrolled down to see the after pic. It looks neat. Good job!

I'm unable to count the times I never went back to a hair butcher. I ended up having my own hair cut at home by a friend. I think it's ok for guys. Thanks, Dolores. :)

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

Thanks, Pacal. I am glad that you enjoyed the humor. I still can't believe that my son actually allowed me to put his picture on here!

elabela 2 years ago

nice hair colour. does he get it from you or his father? (i'm assuming it's natural)

Dolores Monet 2 years ago

elabela - sorry, can't give you any advice on the color. He got it from 2 grandmothers. Thanks!

Granny's House 21 months ago

What a great hub. In times like these this is great info to have. I am going to bookmark and rate. Thank you!

Dolores Monet 21 months ago

Granny - thanks! This hub needs a bit of attention. It's been kind of lonely lately.

Ardie 7 months ago

I loved this article and the pictures were outstanding! I used to cut my girls hair until I got a school picture of one of them and realized I was NOT good at it hahaha Her little bangs were so crooked and uneven she looked like she came off the streets :D

Dolores Monet 7 months ago

Ardie - haha. I have a picture of myself as a child with those crockedy bangs. But there were so many times I had the kids hair cut proffessionally, and my own as well, and came home hating it, I figure that I can hate it for free! Haha. This hair cut worked out quite well and my own often do as well. Thank you!

susan54 7 months ago

Dolores Monet, I'm not a man but I wear a mans flattop haircut and I love it and my husband trims it sometimes for me. nice read.

cgilson 6 months ago

Thanks for showing me how to cut my son's hair. I think I did a good job. I hope he likes it. It will save me money and I hate to spend money on haircuts. I always knew I could do it but was always worried. So, thanks. I'm glad I found your hub.

Rhea 6 months ago

Hi im am a licensed cosmetologist and i would like to say for one, these are not the scissors you should use to cut anyone hair, and second, when your cutting hair you should not us a wide tooth comb like that.

Thank you

Rhea

P.S. if your looking for a good hair dresser that charges reasonable prices just let me know.

Dolores Monet 6 months ago

Rhea - well I am not. These are the materials that I used and the young man looked wonderful afterwards. Thanks for your suggestions, but I have been to professional hair dressers lots of time, taken my kids as well, and was horrified at the results. Maybe I used the wrong comb (try getting a fine toothed comb through this kid's hair) but all were pleased with the result.
