I love Cole slaw but sometimes, I want something a little different. Slaw - salad with shredded vegetables, can be fully prepared ahead of time with dressing added. Of course, you can alter the ingredients to suit your own taste.

When you first add your dressing to slaw, it may seem a bit dry. Slaw becomes wetter over time. You can easily adjust flavoring ingredients to taste.

Oriental Broccoli Slaw

1 lb. bag broccoli slaw (commercially bagged broccoli slaw often contains additional vegetables)

1 medium onion (yellow, sweet, Vidalia, or red) - diced

1 package Ramen noodles (Oriental flavor) - keep flavor packet

4 oz. sunflower seeds

1 Tablespoon soy sauce

1 Tablespoon vinegar

1 Tablespoon light sesame oil

1 Tablespoon sugar (or honey)

Mix broccoli slaw and diced onion. Cut uncooked Ramen noodles into small cubes. Add to broccoli. Add sunflower seeds.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flavor pack from the Ramen noodles, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, and sugar.

Add to slaw.

This slaw flavors up after a couple of hours. It's a great make-ahead side dish if you're taking something to a party. Commercially shredded broccoli also comes in a 2 lb. package. If you use the 2 lb. package, double the other ingredients.

Cool Southwestern Slaw

1/2 medium cabbage

small onion, diced

1 carrot, diced or shredded

green pepper, chopped

1/3 - 1/2 Cup mayonnaise

1 Tablespoon Key Lime juice

1 - 2 Tablespoons sugar

1 Tablespoon dried cilantro

parsley (optional)

pinch salt

fresh ground pepper

Julianne or chiffonade (finely slice) half the cabbage, shred the rest. Add other vegetables.

Whisk mayonnaise, lime juice, sugar, salt, and pepper. Add to slaw. Toss with cilantro and parsley. Again, slaw becomes wetter after an hour or two so don't overdo wet ingredients.

Thank you for visiting my hub, Nancy. Try one of these recipes - they are delicious. The broccoli slaw is a big hit around here.

Bob, it's new to me and suddenly one of my favorites as well. It seems to keep over a night so you can make it one day and have it the next as well. Thank you for commenting.

That oriental broccoli slaw sounds delicious! Got that one on my 'to do' list now, thanks! We have tons of radishes to use up, so I'm thinking this would be a good time to make some slaw. :)

Pam - I think the radishes would be great added to the slaw, would give it some nice color variation as well. Thanks for stopping by!

Oh man, I'm almost saddened summer is almost over already. But I do love slaw, and so I will definitely have to give a couple of these a go.

Springboard - so glad you found this hub. I had totally forgotten about this slaw! Food whims come and go. Thank you!

I love cole slaw, and think I'll give the Cool Southwestern slaw a whirl. I do a summer slaw (took this idea from Giant) add diced tomato and cucumber...AWESOMENESS!!

Dolores Monet 16 months ago

imatellmuva - Ha! I almost forgot about this slaw! I get into a food and we wind up eating it all the time, then I drop it like a hot potato. Must make it again. Thanks!

imatellmuva 16 months ago

I do the same thing! But, fell in love with the Summer Slaw the first time I tried it, and never went back to a traditional slaw again...except when topped on an all beef hotdog with onions and mustard...Hallelujah!!!

Dolores Monet 16 months ago

imatellmuva - oh yes, hot dogs must be beef or why bother, and without onions and mustard the same. This is all starting to sound too much like summer!
