Suddely It's Spring at the 2010 Philadelphia Flower Show - A Photo Album

By Dolores Monet

At the end of winter, when the earth that shows through dirty old snow is mud; when rain gutters hang off houses from the last blizzard; when photographs taken out doors could be mistaken for black and white pictures; when the Olympics have ended and you've just had it with winter - visit the Philadelphia Flower Show where suddenly, it's spring!

The Philadelphia Flower Show is located at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on 12th and Arch Streets in Philadelphia, PA from Sunday, February 28 until Sunday, March 7, 2010. Hours are from Monday to Friday 10:00 AM til 9:30 PM and on Saturday, March 6, from 8:00 AM until 9:30 PM.

I went to the flower show on the first day. The convention center is filled with trees, shrubs, and flowers all in bloom. Walk in from the gray, gritty streets through wide open doors into spring with all the color, brilliance, and joy that comes with spring, but all at once!

Florists, landscapers, gardening clubs, and horticultural organization gather for one week to display the best of what spring has to offer : birch trees in their first leaf, azaleas and rhododendrons all in bloom; hyacinths; roses; tulips; and orchids galore.

I visited the flower show on Sunday and if these pictures don't induce you to attend, at least share in the beauty of uplifting, joyous springtime, with a bit of summer thrown in.

The theme of this year's annual event is Passport to the World. Displays feature horticultural and floral displays that depict the cultural and botanical feel of every continent but Antarctica. Be a guest at an Indian wedding. Stroll past an Indonesian garden. Listen to Brazilian music and view an Chinese emperors palace.

You can check out art created of dried botanical - amazing creations of landscapes that look like oil paintings. See the latest and most creative uses of flowers in floral designs. You can see tropical plants, learn how to bonsai, attend workshops in gardening and floral arranging. Learn how to use environmentally friendly techniques in your own garden, or take a look at incredibly beautiful window boxes.

The Philadelphia Flower Show will inspire you to create a fabulous garden at home with displays of actual sized small yards.

Everybody is friendly there. If you have a question, just turn around and ask anyone. Someone is sure to have an answer. And if they don't, just chat with folks from all over about gardening practices, favorite flowers, and how much they love the show.

Afterward, wander over to the vendors area where you can purchase orchids, flowers by the bunch, willow and pussy willow twigs, vases, bonsai, containers, garden ornaments and more.

It's a long day so wear comfortable shoes!

Wow! I am so glad you were there and shared your experience with us hibernating Philadelphians who are too chicken to venture out in this lousy cold. I applaud you! It's been years since I've attended the show, but I know it is magnificent beyond words. Say, the lilies encased in ice sent shivers up my spine. Well done!

Dolores - Great hub for this time of year. I attend a flower and bulb show every year as well in a nearby town.

My grandsons just brought me in a handful of daffodils the other day and they are fully opened today.

There's something about flowers this time of year that is such a lift. I love the intro to your hub, it says it all.

Great Job once again,

Sage

Sally, it's a bit of a drive but well worth it, such inspiration, I loved it. Thanks for stopping in!

Thank you, Sage, I appreciate the comment. It's about time to bring in some forsythia branches and watch them open up. Your grandsons are wonderful to bring you such a sunny gift!

Wow! We wish we could go, especially Pat who used to work in horticulture.

The photos are wonderful: our favourite is the oriental gateway display.

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos.

2Patricias, thank you for commenting on my hub. I wish I had more pictures to share. I too love the Emporer's Palace and had to include the close up that showed how they built that little hill all covered with moss. That was so cool!

You have succeeded well in giving us some springtime--though out here in Denver there are a few signs of it already with robins and magpies in the backyard.

Dolores Monet, interesting hub, not a flower guy but I am interested in growing a few varieties like some of the vining roses, they have one they claim to be the largest, oldest in Tombstone, Arizona where they planted gunslingers as well. I'd like to grow some different colors of Poppys as well they a pretty.

Hi, juneau, glad you enjoyed the little burst of springtime! Somehow, we seem to have robins all year long, even with all the snow we've been getting.

50 - I love poppies, they are so pretty but have not done well with them in the past. Maybe I'll try again. Thanks for stopping in!

Lgali - glad you enjoyed the hub!

poetlorraine - I love the flower show. It really gets you in the mood for working outside.

PeggyW - I am not much on attending those big indoor shows, they can be expensive but the Philadelphia Flower Show is supurb! Thanks for reading and commenting!

Wow! I'm so envious of your first hand experience with all the flowers! I would have probably gone crazy taking pictures of them if I was there too.

We actually just finished a flower festival here in the Philippines too. However, I also was not able to attend because I was somewhere else. Next year, I'll make sure that I will catch it.

Thanks for sharing your experience and beautiful pictures!
