Visit St. Michaels on Maryland's Eastern Shore - A Quaint Water Oriented Town
89Weekend Tourist Destination on MD's Eastern Shore
St. Michaels, Maryland is a small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore near Easton that just oozes charm. At 1 1/2 hours from Washington, DC, and a relatively short drive from Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Wilmington, Delaware, St. Michaels, MD. has become a weekend tourist destination for the mature set.
Located on a peninsula jutting into the Chesapeake Bay, Saint Michaels is known for it's quaint main street, cute shops, boating, fishing, and seafood. And the flat terrain of the Eastern Shore makes St. Michaels a great place to cycle, especially west of town where the roads are less traveled, and bordered by trees and beautiful farms.
St. Michael's is located off Route 50. Turn west onto Rt. 322 (Easton Bypass). At the fourth traffic light, bear right onto Rt 33 (St. Michael's Road) and drive about 9 miles.

St. Michaels, Maryland - History
Saint Michaels was laid out in the 1770's by James Braddock and became a ship building town due to its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay. By 1812, six ship builders were located there, drawing the interest of the British during the War of 1812.
On August 10, 1813, the townspeople got wind of a planned British attack. In order to protect the ship builders, main street, and homes, the people set lanterns high in the trees and on the tops of ships' masts. The British were fooled into believing the lights were the ilghts of the town and the canon fire missed their intended targets.
One of the more well known type ships built at St. Michaels was the Baltimore Clipper, a fast moving schooner that came in handy for outrunning blockades and pirates.
As the ship building business declined, the watermen took over with crabbing and oystering. Delicious seafood is available there today with steamed crabs, shoftshell crabs, crab cakes, and oysters being popular menu items in area restaurants.
In the late 1880's, steamboats filled with tourists from Baltimore began to visit towns on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. St. Michaels offered a few guest cottages and a lovely get-a-way from the busy urban area. It was not until the 1970's that St. Michaels popularity as a tourist destination began in earnest with the opening of the Chesapeake Maritime Museum in 1965.
The Chesapeake Maritime Museum offers indoor and outdoor displays, offering insight into local history, local culture, fishing and commerce in the Chesapeake Bay region. Art work my maritime artists is often featured as well as several historic vessels.
The Hooper Straight Lighthouse, built in 18880 was slated for demolition in the mid-20th century. But the Chesapeake Maritime Museum acquired it and saved it for posterity.

St. Michaels - A Visit to Saint Michaels
A visit to St. Michaels always includes a long stroll down its picturesque main street. Talbot Street is lined with beautiful old buildings, and cute shops offering whimsical decor, ice cream, art, and crafts.
You can find a place to go birdwatching, bring your own boat, or charter a sail boat. You can stay at an old hotel, or in one of the many Bed and Breakfast establishments.
Fun festivals and events are held throughout the year, including a folk festival, Waterman's Appreciation Day, art shows, and antique car shows.
In spring, St. Michaels hosts a wine and food festival. In fall, there is the annual Halloween Parade. And in September, the Chesapeake Maritime Museum holds its annual boat auction. Donating a used boat to the museum is tax deductible. The boats are later sold or auctioned off. In October, visit the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival where hundreds of boat enthusiasts gather to show off their skiffs, canoes, kayaks, and row boats and you can attend workshops and demonstrations relating to small crafts.
St. Michaels has been the home of several important people. Frederick Douglas lived a portion of his life as a slave at nearby Mount Misery Farm. Vice President Dick Cheney has a bay front home near St. Michaels. And James Michener stayed at St. Michaels while writing his novel, Chesapeake.
In 1988, the movie Clara's Heart, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Neil Patrick Harris was filmed there. In 2004, the movie The Wedding Crashers starring Own Wilson was filmed there as well.

2 of My Favorite Shops in St. Michaels
The Gregorio Gallery at 104 North Talbot Street (410-745-0927) offers an exquisite collection of fine photographs, many with a local theme. For 35 years, Pete Gregorio's first love was black and white photography. Thanks to Digital Image Rendering Technology, Pete he made the switch to color as the technology allows him to recreate the scene as he saw it, although black and white 'will always be closest to my heart.'
The pictures displayed at Gregorio Gallery depict the area's hidden corners, back roads, and waterways with a dream like and mysterious quality. Rural scenes, old barns, boats, and country road present a different world, beautiful and serene. It can be hard to believe that such pastoral charm exists almost just around the corner.
Gatsby's Collection 1007 South Talbot Street (410-745-3700) Located just east of Saint Michaels historic district, Gatsby's offers a unique collection of imported goods, European and American antiques, statuary (and tons of it), fountains, urns, furniture, decorating accessories, and interesting items from 22 countries. You can lose yourself in the fascinating 40,000 square foot warehouse of really cool stuff.

Next time we're back that way, we'll have to pay at visit. It sounds like a fascinating little town. Thanks, Dolores.
Great hub. Love the pics and video. I would rather go where there are no tourists
I love the old buildings and the fact that they were allowed to stands. Enjoyed the videos too.
WOW just by looking at the photographs you can tell this is a well cared for and loved place which says alot about the people. Very impressive, I've never been to St. Michaels on the eastern shore of Maryland and now find it a must see! Thanks :)
What a beautiful city and your pictures enhanced the story...Good job; thanks for sharing this info...
Hi Dolores - we spent a delightful half a day at St. Michael's in 2000 driving there from Baltimore. We had some great wine at their winery. I remember.
What a lovely article I recently spent some time over on the Eastern Shore as well but the Virginia half.I don't know if you have ever been to Cape Charles, but it is quite similar to your description of St. Michael's. The people are all friendly in those little Eastern Shore villages and visiting them is like opening a time capsule to an earlier time in America.
I think next time I have work to do on the Eastern Shore I will head on up to Maryland and check out this charming little town myself.
cool hub! I think I mighta driven thru there going to Ocean City.. next time, I'll check it out!!
after reading James Michener's Chesapeake numerous times, I'm dying to see this area!
Nice Hub with gorgeous photographs. Thank you for this pleasant journey. I enjoyed it. :-)
My husband is from the Chesapeake Bay and loves St. Michael's. We'll certainly be visiting! Great pictures; I love those houses.
I love St. Michael's, and try to do a daytrip there several times a year during the different seasons. It feels like a mini-vacation to a different era. Even though there's a tourist feel to main street, the waterfront area and small side streets have wonderful historic houses and buildings.
Thanks for sharing this hub.
I once made the mistake of going to St. Michael's on a 95 degree day, which was not fun because there's no beach or swimming pool access that I'm aware of. Now I go on 70 to 80 degree spring and fall days. I agree that fall is the most spectacular time to visit.
